In recent years the Ghana cotton industry has been in serious decline. The government wants to rebuild the cotton crop and has in place a concession system similar to that of Mozambique. GLCC has been approached to help re-establish the cotton industry in Ghana.
Working with joint venture partners who have existing commodity production infrastructure in the country, the operation is based in a concession in the North of Ghana around Tamale, and is in its first season of operation.
GLCC and its partners are again working with DEG as part of the COMPACI Initiative to develop sustainable cotton production in Ghana. The project aims to have 100,000 small-holder farmers working in cotton production by 2016. With the goal of assisting farmers to make the transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture, the project will establish an extension and inputs distribution network, provide inputs on credit, train farmers in best agronomic and crop management practices and establish a seed-cotton buying network
